If the layered PSD you got from an online tool looks softer than the image you fed it, you are not imagining it — and the cause is architectural rather than a setting you missed. Most AI layer tools sit on a model that re-draws your picture on a small internal canvas, so what comes back is a re-rendering, not your file. Fine for a web mockup, useless for print. This separates the original at its real resolution and writes a genuine layered PSD at the source dimensions.
Keep full resolutionWhy your AI-generated PSD came out low resolution
A single free layered-diffusion model powers most of the image-to-PSD sites that appeared in the last year, and it decomposes an image by re-generating it as separate layers on a reduced internal canvas. That ceiling is inherited by every tool built on it, however the site is branded, and it is not something a paid tier can lift. The clearest published measurement of it comes from one source, so we will name it rather than hide behind "reviews say": 302.AI's teardown of Qwen-Image-Layered, published on Medium in January 2026, fed the model a 1600×1280 image and got 704×576 back — roughly half the pixel information discarded — and concluded that the loss of detail "greatly limits its application in commercial design or printing scenarios requiring high-resolution output". That is one review, not a consensus, and we have not reproduced it ourselves; it is quoted because it is the only teardown that published the numbers.
Generation is not separation
The distinction is the whole argument. Re-drawing your scene as layers means the tool is inventing new pixels that resemble yours; a resolution-preserving approach does the opposite — it computes a mask and lifts the pixels that are already in your file. Nothing is regenerated except the area that was genuinely hidden behind a removed object, which no method can recover because it was never photographed. So the question to ask any tool is not "what resolution do you output" but "do you re-render my image or mask it", because the answer to the second determines the answer to the first.
Your pixels stay native
We segment the original image and lift the pixels that are already there. Untouched areas and separated subjects keep every original pixel, and the PSD is written at the full source width and height rather than at a preview size. A 4K image in gives a 4K layered PSD out. Very large images are downscaled for the interactive AI so that clicking stays responsive — the mask is computed small and then applied to the full-resolution pixels — but the exported file is never downscaled.
The one part that is reconstructed
The background revealed behind a lifted object has to be generated. Smooth regions — sky, a gradient, a flat wall — are filled in your browser for free by a harmonic solver that reproduces a colour ramp exactly, which is genuinely lossless for that class of hole. Textured regions go to the server fill from 2 credits, and large or structured holes route through an HD pass at a higher price, currently 6 credits, which reconstructs at high resolution around the hole rather than across the whole picture. Either way the rebuilt regions are named with an AI_Fill_ prefix, so you always know which pixels are original and which were reconstructed.
Text is the other place resolution goes missing
A re-rendered layer stack destroys type twice over: once by resampling it, and once by leaving it as pixels. Detected text here comes back as a real Photoshop type layer carrying the string, so it is vector at any output size and stays crisp on a banner instead of turning into a soft raster smear. This is also the easiest thing to check on somebody else's output — open the PSD, click the headline, and see whether a cursor appears or whether you are looking at a picture of words.
How to check any tool, including this one
Three checks, none of which need our cooperation. First, compare pixel dimensions: open the exported PSD and read its width and height against your source. If they differ, the tool re-rendered rather than separated. Second, zoom to 100% on a hard edge — lettering, a fence line, a hair boundary — and look for the softness that resampling always leaves. Third, drag a lifted layer aside and see what the fill underneath looks like at full zoom, because a fill generated at a small canvas and scaled up is obvious the moment it is enlarged. If a tool passes those, the resolution claim is real. And if you have already produced a low-resolution PSD somewhere else, re-run from the original high-resolution source rather than from the downscaled output — detail that was thrown away cannot be added back after the fact.

Does it downscale my image?
No. Original and separated pixels are kept at native resolution and the PSD is written at your image dimensions. Only regenerated fill areas are model-limited, and those are clearly marked with an AI_Fill_ prefix.
Will the text stay sharp?
Detected text is rewritten as a real editable type layer, so it stays vector-crisp at any size instead of becoming a blurred raster.
What about a 4K or larger image?
Supported. Separation and export are full resolution. A very large regenerated fill is the only place resolution is capped; your original content is not.
Is there a fully lossless option?
Original and separated pixels are lossless, and a smooth-background fill in the browser is effectively lossless too because it solves for the colour ramp rather than generating texture. JPEG artefacts already baked into your source cannot be undone, and the fill behind a removed object is reconstructed rather than photographed — that is inherent to the job, not to the tool.
Why do so many AI layer tools share the same limit?
Because most of them share the same free layered model, which returns layers on a reduced internal canvas. One published teardown (302.AI on Qwen-Image-Layered, January 2026) measured 1600×1280 in and 704×576 out. Sites built on that model inherit its ceiling regardless of how they are priced or branded.
Can I fix a low-res PSD I already made?
Not from the output — re-run from your original high-resolution source. Lost detail cannot be recovered from a downscaled file by any tool that is being honest with you.
